WCYC Candidates for Board of Directors 2022

We are proud to introduce the following individuals as candidates for the WCYC Board of Directors. (Candidates will also have an opportunity to introduce themselves during the Annual Meeting.)

This year, five seats are up for re-election. Four have those seats have “come due” this year. The fifth seat was vacated earlier this year.

BILL BETTS - 17 years ago my wife Adrienne, our four children and I, started attending WCYC. My first observation of the camp was one of great encouragement. The people were friendly and loving and God‘s spirit was strong through the entire place.

My second observation was the great need for building repair and maintenance. Since I was a contractor for many years with a focus on maintenance, I couldn’t help but feel drawn to service at this wonderful place.

Three years ago I had the opportunity for the first time to serve as a board member and begin to realize the vision of improving our facilities. Much has been accomplished in the last couple years and I know more will be done in the near future as well.

I would like to serve another term and be part of the worthy mission of updating and keeping our facilities in great shape. I believe the facilities committee that I have been a part of can truly make a continued difference over the next few years.

I have been the preacher at Pine Hill Church of Christ for the last seven years and live less than 1 mile from camp.

CLIFF CUNNINGHAM - I have been a Wisconsin resident for 24 years. Throughout that time, I have attended the Mandrake Road Church of Christ in Madison.throughout that time.

During the day, I am a computer trainer and support guy for UW-Madison. If elected to the Board of Directors, I would bring my computer skills, my communication skills, and a desire to make the campgrounds an even better place.

My daughter went to WCYC’s camp sessions, from Junior to Senior… and she loved it! I would be honored to serve on the Board.

ZACH GEIER - I have been married to my wife Jennifer (Peterson) for 11 years with three young children. We live near WCYC at the moment, just down the road near Cataract.

I did not grow up with the opportunity to attend WCYC, but based on recommendations from my wife I was a volunteer for the senior sessions in 2018 and 2019. My wife, Jenn, did grow up attending WCYC and shared with me the profound impact it had on her life. I was skeptical but after serving as a cabin counselor for two years I found what made her hold WCYC in such high regard.

Unfortunately, I was unable to serve as a volunteer/counselor for the last two years but now that our children are nearly old enough to attend WCYC I look forward to the opportunity for our children to attend and also become further involved.

WCYC is important because as I look at the world around us I see a nation in decline due in large part to our disregard for the Christian values we once held in high regard. WCYC is a beacon of light in a dark world and I want that light to continue to shine.

The job God has given me during this period in my life is as an Accountant at Dairyland Power Cooperative in La Crosse, WI. As a board member, I would bring my financial/ analytical skills as well as the everyday laborer skills I learned growing up on my parent's dairy farm.

LARRY MUDD - I've served the Oakhaven Church in Oshkosh for the past three years. Before that, I ministered at the Manhattan Church of Christ in New York City for over twenty years.

I was born again in college, and grew up in a liturgical tradition that didn't sponsor summer camps; though as a Boy Scout, scout camps were highlights of my year.

We raised our kids in New Jersey, from which we moved in 2019, and they were blessed to attend for years a tremendous Christian camp, New Life Island (literally an island in the Delaware River). It was so good for them to experience Jesus at their level each year in the midst of so many more of their peers, and that camp will forever be a lasting touchstone in their faith life.

Jim Coehorn first invited me to serve at Intermediate Camp in 2021, and I returned for three weeks this past summer for the second half of Intermediate and all of Senior. It's been such a blessing to be part of the kids' lives and hold them in prayer over the intervening year. It would be a privilege to serve further as a member of the board.

In terms of being of use, I'd already spent some time creating video content for the web before COVID, and the move online when the pandemic came along gave me even more practice in doing so. So I can help tell WCYC's stories in that way, and would be happy to serve in other capacities as well.

CHERYL WHITESITT - I've been growing in God's grace as a Christian and been blessed with my fine Christian husband, Allen, since 1976. We live on a small farm in Brownsville, MN. Our three children grew up at WCYC. One granddaughter has already grown up at WCYC and is off to college while her younger siblings continue to be active campers.

Over the years, especially since 2012 when our first granddaughter started camp, I’ve counseled in the cabins, taught Bible Classes, and have been the Lead or Co-Lead Bible Teacher, as well as anything else that needs to be done.

My husband and I sponsor campers and love to be involved in the hands-on work. Some recent projects have included building bunk beds and building the framework for two new swings. We always come to camp with tools prepared to do repairs or to build.

Since 2000, I've been the State Director of the Minnesota Future Problem Solving (FPS) Program, a 501c3 non-profit corporation; teaching creative and critical thinking skills as tools to solve real world problems. Between our own business, Al's Small Engine, working for a non-profit, submitting State and Federal reports, as well as farming all of my life, God continues to mold me into His servant. I hope to bring these skills, as well as a new energy to the leadership of the WCYC Board of Directors.
